Yesterday, on October 10, the Iranian “Icana” news agency published the interview of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in which the minister referred to the recently opened Iranian consulate in Kapan.
In particular, the minister said that the opening of the consulate in Kapan will strengthen Armenian-Iranian cooperation. The purpose of the opening is to give a new impulse to Armenian-Iranian relations. “This step, which will contribute to the strengthening of the North-South transit road, was undertaken by the two countries with the particular aim of developing and strengthening cooperation in the economic sphere,” he said, adding: “We will witness the expansion and deepening of relations between Armenia and Iran.”
On this occasion, the spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Nasser Kanaani also made a comment during the press conference held on October 10. The latter said that the official activity of the consulate has started, and this is a very clear diplomatic step based on consensus and common interests between the two countries.
Also, referring to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, especially the recent events around the borders, the speaker stressed that Iran is in favor of the diplomatic settlement of the issue. Also, the speaker emphasized once again that geopolitical and international borders should be respected, and no change that would be against Iran’s interests could take place. Thus, the clear and official position of the Islamic Republic of Iran has not changed.
Let’s remind you that on September 30, the newly appointed Consul of the Republic of Iran in Kapan, Morteza Abedin Varamin, handed over the consular license to the de-facto Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia. The presence of the consulate in Kapan once again emphasizes the fact of the strategic importance of Syunik and the centuries-old Armenian-Iranian border for Iran, and more specifically, the necessity of the inviolability of these two. And on this topic, the Iranian side has repeatedly made statements even at the level of the spiritual leader.
